Disability access and evacuation should be inclusive at the point of design. There are experts in this field, who we can recommend if you would like assistance.
Often the provision of Evacuation Chairs and Stair Climbers is part of the tender process and part of a package. Firms may have their preferred supplier, who may only offer one option rather than a range.
For powered wheelchairs and many manual wheelchairs there are only a couple of models that can take a person in their wheelchair to a place of safety. The stairs and landings should therefore be designed to that measurement. You must consider the turning circle of the wheelchairs and models so that people can be safely evacuated, in the design stage.
Having a range of equipment means that the correct units are purchased and provided. We offer a complete service offering the most appropriate units for the people who are likely to enter the building, the stairs, landings, and the use of the building.
The worst case we saw was a government building where 60 friction belts evacuation chairs were purchased, yet the fire escape were spiral stairs and therefore the chairs would not work.
The client then had to purchase the correct model that works on flared and spiral stairs.
Evacuation Chairs and Stair Climbers are not a ‘tick box’ they should be fit for purpose.
Construction and refurbishments. Often a lift is taken out of service and therefore, access and egress are still required. We have provided our TRE-70 and TRE-52 to companies so that people with reduced mobility can still use services and venues.
